Pence is abhorrent. He was one of the leaders of the government shutdown, which cost billions of dollars--a tantrum because they lost the ACA vote. He signed a law requiring women to hold funerals for aborted fetuses. He's a science/evolution/climate denier who says smoking isn't harmful.

i’ve noticed many people posting on this site seem to have completely given up on religion/spirituality.. but some have attended services at another religion, or just follow their own heart regarding what to believe.. my question is how does anyone deal after leaving with all of the witness crap that we believed about babylon the great, the great harlot, spiritual prostitute, etc., etc.
i’m finding out that i seem to have built myself a pretty solid wall regarding religion.. some people can just chuck all beliefs into one basket saying that they are all basically garbage,,, and that is ok, no problem i respect that.. but for myself there is a certain part of my personality that needs a spiritual belief not like the witnesses in any way, but something to meditate on, and contemplate.. being a witness taught me how bad it is to actually think of god in any other way besides what the jw’s believe.
and now when i attend any other service, the dark jw side seems to pop out and seriously makes me believe that everything i see/do/say is wrong.
I got it a bit backwards, but my process went something like...
Well, now I know JWs aren't the correct religion, so I need to find the right one...
Which Christian religion is is?.....
Is it a Christian religion?...
Is there a "one true religion"?
Does God even want and/or need to be worshiped?
Does God even exist?
I would have saved myself years if I asked the last question first.

this is the one thing that i have struggled with since leaving the organization.
i recognize the need and value of belonging somewhere, being a part of something, showing up weekly to a community where me and my husband and children are loved and utilized and incorporated and cared for.

I've never gone to one of their services, but many people I've spoken to recommend Unitarian Universalism for non-religious people looking for spirituality and/or community.
a recent o.p origins of the universe bought home to me with ovbious clarity that i have no scientific background.
this realization was rather embarrassing for myself to admit, particularly as my child of 11 has began asking some rather intersting questions on scientific matters.
anyway i have subscribed to " scientific america" because i find it a great magazine for those with no scientific background.

I like how this is now just an accepted fact.
while reading the magazines the other day it occurred to me that jws never really had a very good answer to that question.
because it was aimed at young people and it said something along the lines, "if you believe in god you have a purpose, but if you don't believe in god your life has no purpose or meaning".
i think that is a faulty analysis of the situation.

Without going into much philosophical detail, one problem immediately jumps out. When we talk about whether something matters, we're talking about whether it matters to someone. So if God does not exist then justice, love, and virtue can't matter to God, obviously, but they can still matter to humans.

Well... it was a long time coming, it just felt faster to them because they weren't paying attention. If this is the article I read recently, part of the story is that they feel abandoned by conservatives. They were courted and paraded by Cruz, and named to some evangelical martyr council in his campaign or something. When that faded away they feel abandoned because they're not in the evangelical spotlight anymore. Calling their bistro a "church" is new to me, but I shed no tears for bigots, even if they're only bigots because they hear voices in their heads.
